How to Post on the Pipe Newsgroup

POSTING ON THE PIPE NEWSGROUP

Firstly remember - Sharing is good. For those of you using the DC - that is good but you must realise that if you upload one file in DC only one person will get it. But if you upload that same file to the newsgroup then inexcess of 150 people can all download from it - and it has only caused you your bandwith once. And if you post apps, games, movies etc it will encourage more users to post.

This guide is designed for people to upload only Legally owned files eg - home movies, freeware and shareware etc. And since I am making this guide fast - don't blame me for any errors.

The following software you need installed is

Powerpost 2000 YENC (make sure it is a yenc version) -http://www.cosmicwolf.com/Files/PowerPost2000yEnc-exe.zip
Win RAR version 3.10 or higher - http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
FSRaid - http://www.fluidstudios.com/fsraid.html Or SmartPar

a) SPLITTING UP THE FILES

1) What we want to do first of all is to split the file that you want to post up into nice manageable chunks. We recommend 15MB size files - using Win RAR. After installing WinRAR go into your windows explorer and select the files you want to upload and right click, choose WinRAR and the choose ADD TO ARCHIVE.

If you want to change the default directory this is where it will appear, change the file name because WinRAR can sometimes pick stupid ones.
This is the most important part when it comes to posting large binaries. This is where you choose the file size - a size somewhere between 10mb -20mb per RAR is appropriate. You have to put the size in bytes.See picture below for more info. Mostly it is good to put a file size of aobut 15mb- hence 14,457,664 bytes.
Set the Compression to STORE if you are uploading a Movies. Set to NORMAL if it is a Game or Application.
Set the ticks as shown in number 5 of the picture - Minor settings.

That is done - it should make about 40-50 rar files about 15mb each for one full cd (650-700mb)

b) CREATING PAR FILES

This is where you use your FSRAID program. It is very simple to use

1) Load up FSRAID and press the CREATE.

2) A new window will pop up. Click on ADD FILES. Go to the directory where you created the RAR files and select all the rar files.

3) The scroll bar at the bottom should be set to about 10% - that seems to be roughly the accepted amount of PAR files. And choose the output directory and let it run - takes a few mins.

c) POSTING WITH POWER POST 2000 YENC

1) Start up Power Post 2000 Yenc and got VIEW --> Program Settings (or press the first button on the toolbar)

NewsServer Tab - type in news-server.pipenetworks.com as the NNTP news server and leave everything else as it is.
Headers Tab - Type in a username and email address of your choice
Newsgroup Tab - Click on the Add button and add the following groups
Program Tab - type in 7000 as the Max Lines per Part and have all the options ticked

2)To Queue the files for posting on the newsgroup -do File --> Add Files (or press the second button on the toolbar). A pop-up box will open allowing you to go to the directory where the files are stored and selecting all the RAR and PAR files that you made. After that you will come up wiht a new pop-up box to setup your files

Subject Tab - This is where you type in your description of the file you are uploading. You have to put the word YENC somewhere in the description ( a good place would be at the end). You also have to put the $F - which symbols the File names. An example of a good description would be "Mission Impossible 3 Trailers- File $1 of $2 $F yenc

Newsgroup Tab - Here you just tick the appropriate newsgroup that you think it should go - so TV goes in the TV group etc - this would be quite self explanatory
Prefix Tab - This is a place where you type some information that you think the reader might want to know - eg. Length of the movie or the Codec used in encoding it or a special number or date required etc
File Order Tab - This allows you to choose the order of which you want to upload your Files. Generally speaking the Par files can be put at the end of the rest fo the Rar files.

3) To Start Posting - File --> Start Posting (or Press the PLAY button on the toolbar). you can stop and start posting at any time. So if you find that you are going to play a game and requre all the upload speed, just press the stop button and when you wnat to start agian - the start button. PowerPost 2000 remembers teh exactly place to start uploading.

A Point to note - The news server can't store 15mb in one message so what happens is that you send lots of smaller messages which can be put back together to make the original 15mb rar files. A 15MB file will be cut up into about 17-20 smaller posts automatically.
